Chicago Bulls superstar. Charlotte Hornets owner. Casual golfer. Avid gambler. Sometimes yachtsman. One-Time Birmingham Baron. So, to say this multi-hyphenate doesn’t have enough responsibilities is insulting. Besides his ever-growing Air Jordan shoe brand and his love for family, number 23 is taking a turn for the first. Finally, Michael Jordan is now in ownership of a full-time NASCAR Cup team.

Furthermore, this is impressive due to Michael Jordan being the first black principle owner of a NASCAR team since 1973, when Wendell Scott was nearing the end of his competitive career in his own car.

Denny Hamlin, the Joe Gibbs NASCAR driver, is entering a partnership with Michael Jordan to purchase a team charter. Together, they will snag Bubba Wallace, longtime Richard Petty Motorsports NASCAR driver, as a racer.

Michael Jordan’s good friend from the University of North Carolina Tar Heels, former teammate Brad Daugherty inspired Jordan to get into the fandom. From the looks of it, Daugherty had always been into motorsports racing. So much so, in fact, that he would go on to own several different companies surrounding NASCAR Cup Racing Teams. But none of them actually were. There was the NASCAR Truck Series and JTG Daugherty Racing but never the flagship product.

Michael Jordan entering the track changes everything.

For the longest time, there has been a lack of diversity within the motorsports community. Sara Christian made waves as the first woman in NASCAR history, back in 1949, but only recently has there been more of a surge amongst racers like Danica Patrick and Shawna Robinson. Therefore the demand has only grown in size.

Meanwhile, Bubba Wallace has exactly the type of drive, so to speak, that Michael Jordan is looking for to champion his new team. He’s made fifth at the NASCAR Cup Daytona and is looking to place as close as he can to first on Sunday, September 27th.
