The National Insurance Crime Bureau recently released their data reflecting the top ten most stolen vehicles in the United States in 2022. The list consists of a few commonly seen vehicles, as well as a few that reflect a trend that started in 2022 of stealing Kia and Hyundai cars, after a video went viral on TikTok showing how easily the vehicles can be stolen. Some of the cars on the list are a bit of a surprise, being new to the list and not in connection to an internet trend.

10. Honda CRV

The Honda CRV ranked 10th with approximately 13,832 reported thefts in 2022. The vehicle, especially early models, are extremely easy to steal. Since it is a crossover with relation to the Honda Civic, it inherited some of the Civic’s lack of security.

9. GMC Sierra

The GMC Sierra follows the Honda CRV with 16,622 thefts reported in 2022. This vehicle is overall less common, which is why it is likely stolen less than some other pickup trucks. The truck is another in which most models just lack proper security installations.

8. Toyota Camry

A Toyota Camry was reported to be stolen 17,094 times in 2022. The most commonly taken model is the 2021 Camry.

7. Kia Optima

We have reached the first car stolen frequently due to the TikTok trend. The Optima was stolen 18,221 times in 2022. The crazy part of this is no Kia or Hyundai vehicle made the top ten list for 2021.

6. Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra also fell victim to the TikTok trend. This vehicle was stolen approximately 19,602 times in 2022. The stolen models averagely ranged between the 2011 through 2021 models.

5. Hyundai Sonata

Accompanying the Elantra is Hyundai’s Sonata. This vehicle had 21,707 reported thefts. The reason behind the easy thefts of Kias and Hyundais is the lack of an immobilizer, which led to a lawsuit against the companies. They will settle with a $200 million deal which includes free upgrades in security for the affected cars.

4. Honda Accord

This vehicle jumps from the Sonata theft count, with a total of 27,089 thefts. The Accord was on the ranked number four also on last year’s list.

3. Honda Civic

The Honda Civic barely beat out the Sonata with 27,113 reported thefts. The stolen models of this car were most commonly from the 90s and early 2000s, with the 2000 Honda Civic being the most commonly stolen model.

2. Ford F-150

We see a steep jump in thefts here with this truck having 48,175 reported thefts in 2022. The most commonly stolen model is the 2006. This truck is so popular and commonly owned, it would be impossible not to be present here.

Lastly, taking the cake for the number one stolen vehicle of 2022, is the Chevrolet Silverado with 49,903 reported thefts.
