The NASCAR Documentary: “Road to Race Day”

This isn’t the first NASCAR documentary ever produced. It isn’t even the first documentary series about the sport. However, it is well worth the watch given its new angle on storytelling.

Director Cynthia Hill said of the project: “We’re filming something that is about a sport but we’re not treating it like sports coverage . . . We’re using the race as a dramatic tool for the storytelling, but that’s not what it’s about. The outcome of it is not necessarily what we’re trying to tell. We’re trying to tell a much broader story about these teams.”

Hill comes with plenty of prior experience. Her past films include “A Chef’s Life” and “Somewhere South” as well as “Private Violence”, a film about domestic violence. Above all, Hill loves storytelling. The eight-episode NASCAR documentary focuses on the Hendrick Motorsports team’s 2017 racing season. Fans will get to follow Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmi Johnson, Chase Elliott, and Kasey Kahne.

If you want something fun, fast, and encouraging, this is your pit-stop. The first episode is entitled “Don’t Get Discouraged” and centers around rookie Chase Elliott as he takes over for the infamous Jeff Gordon. We could all use a little feel-good media right now, so kick back and enjoy this insightful and inspiring docu-series.
